The Seven Hills Killer is a classic Isle of Wight Mountain Bike
route with its roots in Island Legend going back to the early
1990's when the very first event was held. The Hills Killer, as it is now known, has been
used as an orienteering event every year since its inception and
has come in many different guises, but the general rule has always
been to find placed markers along the way, punch the card to prove
you were there and complete the route without getting lost!! The
course is not set and there are several different routes you can
take, depending on the layout of the markers, but the seven actual
hills are always the same and a knowlegable expert knows the
quickest way up the hills to the markers. The route you see below
is by no means a definitive route for the actual event, but is a
very good example of the best trails to use for the event held in
September during the Isle of
Wight Cycling Festival, or just as a general ride over what is
arguably the best route for Mountain Biking on the Isle of
Wight.
This particular route starts from Freshwater Bay car park and
finishes in Shanklin at Ninham
Farm. The route has been run in reverse several times, but this
is the traditional version. The first climb through

Wight not White!
Isle of Wight , not White!!
The inspiration for whiteonwight.co.uk as a name derives from the confusion as to what the name of our island actually is. Many still believe it is 'The Isle of White'. The actual name for our island is 'The Isle of Wight' . The name is historical and a variety of versions on the origin exist. Some even think a passport is required, but the only passport you will require is a passport to fun and adventure. The term 'white' certainly isn't lost on this unique spur of land seperating the Solent and the English Channel. Much of the Island is made up of chalk ; inland, and on the coast. In fact, it is difficult to go anywhere without some proof of this. The coastline itself is made up of large sections of chalk cliffs, constantly eroding into the sea, but the downs themselves are largely made up of chalk which makes for excellent Mountain Biking terrain complete with awe inspring views form one end to the other at the Island highest points.
